Good reasons to run an online advent calendar

Good reasons to run an online advent calendar for your business: Boost visibility, build customer loyalty and create content you can use all year round.

Summer isn’t quite over yet, but the first gingerbread has already been sitting on supermarket shelves for weeks. Yes, really. Advent may still feel like a distant event, but now is actually a rather good time to start thinking about what you want to do in the final quarter of the year. Because let’s face it: Christmas has a habit of sneaking up on us. Every. Single. Year.

If you enjoy creative marketing as much as I do, there’s a lovely way to give your existing customers something special, attract new people to your list and give your business a proper little year-end boost at the same time. The magic words are: online advent calendar.

For f**** sake, Britta, seriously? It’s only September! Yeah, I know. And I’ll be honest with you: putting together an advent calendar is a fair bit of work. But if you start early, take a sensible approach and don’t leave everything until 30 November (please don’t!), it can really pay off for your business. More visibility, genuine customer loyalty and a whole heap of content you can keep using well into the new year.

So, here are 11 good reasons to get started.

So, what actually is a digital advent calendar?

An online advent calendar works pretty much like the cardboard one you had as a child – except that behind those little doors there’s no piece of chocolate that’s usually gone a bit stale by 12 December. Instead, there’s something that genuinely helps your customers move forward.

Every day during Advent, you open a door and share a useful tip, a clever little trick, a surprise or a bit of inspiration related to your topic. That could be anything from short videos and helpful texts to inspiring quotes, meditations, mini exercises or exclusive discounts.

And where does your digital calendar live? That’s entirely up to you. It could be on your website, in your newsletter or across your social media channels. My personal favourite is a combination of your own website and your newsletter – but I’ll save that topic for another post. Promise.

Why offer an online advent calendar?

Right, let’s get to the good stuff: why is all this effort actually worth it for you and your business? I’ve rounded up the best reasons for you.

You’re giving away a bit of joy – and your expertise at the same time

Do you remember that little flutter of excitement as a child when you got to open a door every morning? The anticipation, the tiny daily thrill, the feeling that there was a little surprise waiting just for you? That’s exactly what you’re giving your customers.

Only instead of a piece of chocolate, they get your knowledge, your ideas and your expertise. And you get to show, almost in passing, just how much you have to offer. That’s generous – and rather clever, too. Because, as we all know, what goes around comes around.

You get noticed by new people

Your advent calendar isn’t just a lovely treat for existing customers. It can also be a brilliant way to attract new people. Over the course of 24 doors, they get to know you, your work and your particular area of expertise. You’re gradually showing them what you know and how you think – without every single interaction screaming, “BUY FROM ME!” And if people sign up for your calendar, you’ve also gained new subscribers for your newsletter. Not a bad little side effect, is it?

You stay on people’s minds

For most people, December disappears in the blink of an eye. There are presents to buy, cookies to burn, plenty of Christmas parties to survive and approximately 847 other things to remember. No wonder a bunch gets lost in the festive chaos. Your advent calendar, on the other hand, gives people a little highlight every single day. And every time someone opens one of your doors, they’re thinking of you. That means you stay front of mind without having to chase anyone around waving a giant “LOOK AT ME!” sign.

You build real relationships

Marketing doesn’t always have to smell like marketing. Your advent calendar is a brilliant opportunity to show a little more of the person behind the business. Don’t just share your expertise. Throw in an anecdote, tell a story, share your favourite recipe or let people have a little peek behind the scenes. That way, your customers get to know you as a person – and that helps build trust and connection. Because at the end of the day, people like buying from people.

You show how versatile you are

Twenty-four doors give you 24 opportunities to show different sides of your work and shine a light on different aspects of your expertise. Your customers might discover something about you or your offering that they hadn’t even realised before. And that can lead to lovely conversations – and sometimes even new work.

You inspire people for the new year

For many people, the turn of the year is a time for reflection, fresh ideas and the inevitable list of good intentions. Your daily tips and little nudges can give your customers inspiration for their own plans and projects. You become associated with fresh starts, new ideas and a bit of get-up-and-go. And that’s a pretty nice basis for working together in the future.

You create reasons to have a chat

Every tip you share is also a little invitation to start a conversation. Encourage people to ask questions, tell you what they think or share their own experiences. That’s how you create a genuine back-and-forth – one that doesn’t necessarily stop when door number 24 has been opened.

And there’s another bonus: your advent calendar is a brilliant opportunity to gather honest feedback. Just ask for it. You’ll learn more about what your customers actually need and want, and you can use those insights to sharpen up your offering.

Your online advent calendar creates content for the whole year

And now for the really good news: the work you put into your calendar once can keep working for you throughout the year. Those tips and little nuggets of wisdom can be repurposed for social media, your newsletter or your blog. That’s sustainable content marketing for you. Or you could bundle all those lovely bits of content together into a little product and sell it afterwards.

One calendar. Twenty-four pieces of content. Plenty of ways to keep getting mileage out of them.

You get to know your customers better

Which doors get opened most often? Which tips get the most replies? Which topics make people ask questions or start conversations? Your advent calendar can be a little goldmine of useful insights. You get to see what really matters to your customers – and that gives you valuable information you can use to sharpen up your offering.

You stand out from the crowd

Hand on heart: how many of your competitors are running their own digital advent calendar? Probably not all that many, I’d wager. By creating one, you’re showing creativity, commitment and a genuine willingness to give something useful rather than simply shouting about your latest offer. And that helps you stand out. More importantly, it gives people something memorable to associate with you.

You start the new year with a spring in your step

After 24 days of lovely interactions, grateful replies and good conversations, you head into the new year with a bit of momentum behind you. You haven’t just given something away. You’ve also gained something in return: appreciation, new ideas, valuable insights and stronger relationships with your customers. Not a bad way to round off the year.

So, what does all this mean for you?

As you can see, a digital advent calendar is so much more than a cute little marketing gimmick. It’s an opportunity to create genuine connections, share your expertise and spread a little joy along the way. Or, as the old saying goes: it’s better to give than to receive.

So, what are you waiting for? Yes, Advent is still a little way off, but good ideas need a bit of time to grow. So start having a think about what topic you’d like to open your doors on this year. Because one thing is certain: with a well-planned advent calendar, you’re not just giving your customers a lovely little gift. You’re giving yourself and your business one, too.
